The Civil War: 30 Full-color Postcards of Dramatic Scenes and Battles of the War Between the States
Ballantine Books; Postcard edition (October 15, 1991)

Excerpt from the introduction by Phil Patton

We think of the Civil War as the first one brought home by photographs, but with the bulky equipment of the time, the photographers could arrive only after the fighting stopped….It was left to newspaper artists, including Winslow Homer as well as the lithographs of Currier & Ives, to capture dramatic and casual moments in the lives of soldiers.
